A YOUNG mum and her baby daughter were killed in Serbia when a drink-driver behind the wheel of a van crashed into their parked car as she breastfed the tot.
The baby’s father and the couple’s three-year-old son were also in the car but survived the accident in the village of Aleksinacki Bujmir in the Nisava district.
Hospital sources say their lives are not in danger.
On the night of the accident, mother Jovana Ljubic and father Dragisa Ljubic, both 28, were coming back from a wedding with their two children in the car.
The family had parked by the side of the road so Jovana could breastfeed six-month-old Dunja when an Opel Vivaro van collided with their Volkswagen Golf.
An unnamed witness was quoted by Serbian media as saying: “The mother and the two children were in the back seat of the car.
“The van crashed in to the car at high speed and it stopped 150 to 200 metres away.”
Serbian media reported that the baby died instantly while Jovana was pronounced dead later in hospital.
Doctor Darko Bogdanovic said: “The woman who was hurt in the accident was brought here without a pulse.
“The doctors tried to reanimate her and managed only for a short time to spark some vital signs but she still died due to extensive injures to her body and internal organs.”
The little boy suffered only scratches and was not seriously injured, while the father is stable after doctors’ intervention.
Jovana was an unemployed nursery governess, while her husband Dragisa is a former soldier now working in the private sector.
People who know them said that they were happy and living in harmony, report Serbian media.
It is not known how badly the van driver was injured. His legal status is unclear as he was not named or mentioned in Serbian reports.
