Host Dermot was on hand to help the wannabe stars and even used his own singing voice to help remind the contestants which song they’ve picked off the wall.

At the start of the challenge, Dermot fired a klaxon and contestants raced to the Wall of Songs and chose a tune – which they later performed together in groups of four.

If they succeeded in impressing the judges – Simon Cowell, Nicole Scherzinger, Sharon Osbourne and Louis Walsh – they got to earn a coveted place at the next stage of Boot Camp, the Arena Auditions.

But some hopefuls nealry fell at the first hurdle by not knowing any songs.

Dermot had to sing a sassy Christina Aguilera song to one poor girl to jog her memory, before offering to sing James Arthur ballad to an older gentleman.

The cheeky presenter said: “I really enjoyed warbling along to the wall of songs.

Meanwhile Scarlett Lee – who claims that TV make-up made her look darker – settled for History by One Direction.

No doubt Simon hand-picked that nostalgic 1D track – perhaps to remind Harry Styles to stop biting the hand that fed him.
