SHE was a feminist icon whose work explored questions of identity, gender, class and race in Mexican society.
And now Theresa May has been spotted wearing a bracelet featuring self-portraits of Frida Kahlo at the Conservative party conference. We reveal all…
Who was Frida Kahlo?
Frida was a Mexican painter and a noted Communist celebrated by many feminists.
She was born in 1907 and was stricken with polio as a child.
Her dreams of becoming a doctor were shattered when she suffered serious injuries in a bus crash on her way back from school.
Frida began painting instead and started off with portraits of herself, her sisters, and school friends.
She attended the renowned National Preparatory School in Mexico city and became famous for how outspoken she was.
The painter was famous for filling her art with struggles and pain she had faced – including The Broken Column which showed her naked and split down the middle with a surgical brace on and nails all over her body.
She was famous for her self-portraits and her famous monobrow, which she refused to change because she said she liked her eyebrows and eyes.
Frida died in July 1954 aged 47 from a pulmonary embolism.
In 2002, blockbuster Frida starring Salma Hayek as the artist was nominated for six Academy Awards.
Was Frida Kahlo a communist?
The artist joined students at her school who shared similar political and intellectual views.
She was a staunch Communist who sometimes fudged her date of birth to align with the start of the Mexican Revolution.
In 1927, she joined the Mexican Communist Party where she met and later married the celebrated muralist Diego Rivera.
She has become an icon for several minority groups and political movements – such as feminists and the LGBTQ community.
Did Theresa May have Frida Kahlo on her bracelet?
The PM was pictured at the Tory party conference in Manchester on October 4 wearing a wooden bracelet featuring the many self-portraits Frida was famous for.
But she was slammed on Twitter for her bold fashion choice.
One wrote: “Never mind the coughing fit – is May wearing a Frida Kahlo bracelet? Ruined forever.”
Another said: “Is that, is that, oh god, is that Frida Kahlo on her bracelet? No it can’t be? What is happening? Friday Kahlo?”
