HOLLYOAKS wanted viewers to think Amy Barnes’ killer had already been caught – with many red herrings thrown in along the way.
The showrunners then left viewers twisting themselves into knots trying to figure out if Harry Thompson or Ste Hay were the killer – but just WHO was Amy’s killer? Here’s everything we know.
Who killed Amy Barnes on Hollyoaks and when are they revealed?
Amy Barnes real killer had escaped justice – until now.
The murderer was FINALLY revealed – Ryan Knight (Duncan James) killed his bride on their wedding day after she discovered that he was having an affair.
This came just after Harry Thompson confessed to the murder to his father Tony, convinced that he had actually killed her.
Viewers are aware that while Harry thinks he killed Amy in a fight over her taking her kids to America, the true culprit is actually Ryan.
Ste Hay was previously found not guilty of killing Amy and he recently returned to the village after being shot by Amy’s mum.
How did the Hollyoaks killer’s confession play out?
Amy’s husband-to-be Ryan was shown in a flashback killing her just hours before they were due to walk down the aisle.
They were seen having a vicious argument on their wedding day after Amy found out Ryan was having an affair with another man, Kyle, played by Adam Rickitt.
He threw her to the floor and she banged her head on the coffee table on her way down.
Ryan was then seen standing over her head body looking horrified at his own actions.
The crooked police officer went on to frame Ste for the murder before having an attack of conscience.
This flashback came after Harry Thompson confessed to the crime to his father, Tony. While viewers are aware that Harry didn’t killer her, he truly believes he did.
The teen soap will devote a special episode to Tony as he deals with the news that his son is a killer.
How did Hollyoaks keep fans guessing about who killed Amy Barnes?
Hollyoaks bosses revealed that SEVEN different death scenes had been filmed to keep viewers guessing.
They have said that actress Ashley Slanina-Davies returned to the soap to film seven explosive death scenes, one of which will be used in the show when her true killer is exposed.
After months of speculation Ryan Knight was revealed as the killer.
So who were the other suspects in the line-up?
Harry was originally a suprise inclusion as one of the characters in one of Amy’s seven death scenes.
He went around to reason with Amy about taking Ste’s kids away from him only for them to argue and he accidentally killed her.
At least, he thought he accidentally killed her. Someone returned to Amy’s flat after Harry had left and finished the job.
Harry told Tony what he thought he had done which led the Hollyoaks patriarch to boot his son out for good.
Ste didn’t exactly make it easy for himself, did he?
First he confessed to killing Amy (for which he had a lot of motive), then he hired James – whose boyfriend cheated on him with Ste – as his lawyer (aren’t there any other lawyers in Hollyoaks??).
All fingers pointed at him – with even Ste himself convincing himself for a while he murdered newlywed Amy in a blacked-out fit of rage.
Harry may have told the police that he was the killer – not Ste – but we know that he wasn’t.
James definitely had the motive to frame Ste. After all, the drug addict and ex-abuser did get it on with the supposed love of his life behind his back.
Also, as his lawyer, he had the ample opportunity to get his own back on Ste.
And at the end of April the Channel 4 soap’s viewers were left stunned after he was revealed as a new suspect in the case.
The new evidence all hung on Mercedes’ memory of hearing a very specific ringtone outside Amy’s house on the night of the murder.
She asked lawyer James to check Ste’s ringtone and he agreed, but then later told a police officer not to bother investigating the device.
Fans were then given a shock twist as James’ phone went off – and it was the ringtone Mercedes heard.
Hollyoaks’ resident officer was also in one of Amy’s seven potential death scenes.
And it was recently revealed that he does have a dark side to him after he was unveiled as Leela Lomax’s secret stalker.
When actor Andre-Hayden Smith, who plays the character, spoke about how dangerous he thought DS Armstrong was he told Digital Spy that he thought he was “pretty ruthless”.
He said: “We’ve seen that with his police work. When he’s got his eye on someone in the village and he reckons they’ve done something wrong, he’s pretty intimidating when he’s got them in the interrogation room.
“So I think he’ll do whatever it takes to get what he wants. He’s a bit of a control freak, I think!”
Mercedes had been appearing to help out the police with their investigation by saying that she saw someone go into Amy’s house the night of the murder.
She’d also been enjoying several romping sessions with Amy’s hubby so definitely had the motive to get rid of Amy.
