Who is Liam Charles and what does he do?

Hackney-born Liam, 20, is a student at Goldsmiths, where he studies Drama and Theatre Arts and is known as “Cake Boy” among his university friends.

He’s aiming to take the coveted Bake Off title despite not being the best in his school’s LGBT baking competition.

For the contest, he created a double chocolate cake with chocolate shards and cream to celebrate Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender history month.

The student eventually lost to a pink triangle cake symbolising the symbol worn by persecuted gay men and lesbian women in Nazi concentration camps.

He’s only been baking for four years but claims to have a vast baking repertoire under his belt.

Liam recently took to Instagram to announce that he’ll be appearing in the GBBO, posting an image captioned: “Alright Alright……..busted. But hey at least ITS OUT NOW!!! #GBBO #greatbritishbakeoff”.

Oi oi im finally 19!! Felt like it took ages but I loved every moment leading up to it and lets be honest I just had to bake for myself…This cake had been inspired by my weekday dessert …. Bananas x Almond butter x greek yogurt x Granola but shhhhh enough about that , more detail when it comes to the slice Picture drop. This year I met some of the most amazing people at my first year of university. Never ending support from my friend’s x Family, lets be fair without you lot I wouldn’t be half of what I am today……ok its getting little bit mushy now 😂😂 But a special thanks to…. @jdtoro_📷 This is the guy who always seems to find time to help me make cheekytreats become a reality. Sooner or later all the re positioning of biscuits x cakes x tarts doughnuts and so on will pay off. CHEERS BRO!!!!!! So in a Nutshell….THANK YOU!! Fingers crossed for another banging year. But before I go could everyone promise me one thing just for today ?? Enjoy your most cheekiest treat ever. Nice one 😘 #bakinglife #baking #foodporn #cakephotography #cakestagram #birthday #birthdaycake #celebration #yum #19 #nomnom #instabake #cheekytreatsuk

Why did Liam Charles apply for the show?

The Londoner believes that baking is a universal language that can bring people together from all walks of life.

He also wants to make it acceptable amongst his peers and the younger generation.

Liam said that his ambition begins at home, as he often bakes with his young nephews to inspire them to have a passion for it too.

When is Great British Bake Off on Channel Four?

The new series of The Great British Bake Off started on August 29 at 8pm and continues to air every week on Tuesday at 8pm Channel 4.

The Bake Off was bought by Channel 4 last year amid much controversy, meaning the popular cooking contest moved from the BBC.

There were a few casualties of the move so popular hosts Mel and Sue and much-loved judge Mary Berry won’t be appearing on the new series.

Paul Hollywood will now be joined on the judging panel by Great British Menu judge Prue Leith.

While the show will now be presented by Sandi Toksvig and funny man Noel Fielding.
