BRIAN Conley is one of Britain’s best-loved comedians and presenters who’s been doing his thing for four decades.
The funnyman is as comfortable on telly as he is entertaining crowds in pantos – and The Sun exclusively revealed he would be joining the Strictly Come Dancing 2017 line-up. Here’s the lowdown on Brian…
Who is Brian Conley, how old is he and what is his background?
Brian Conley is 55-year-old English comedian, TV presenter, actor and singer, who has often referred to himself on telly as “Dangerous Brian”.
Brought up in west London, his father was a cab driver, and he began following his dream of being on stage after going to performing arts school.
He then lied about his age in order to become a Pontin’s Bluecoat, who are responsible for entertaining guests at the resorts.
After performing in a comedy sketch troupe called Tomfoolery, Brian’s first foray into telly came after he acted as a warm-up man for the Krankies, Kenny Everett and Sir Terry Wogan.
With the help of a casting director he landed his own sketch show on telly called This Way Up, before hitting the West End for the first time in Me & My Girl.
The height of his telly fame came in the 90s with The Brian Conley Show, a variety programme, as well as his sitcom Time After Time, Jed Mercurio’s comedy-drama The Grimleys and The National Lottery: We’ve Got Your Number.
Brian was forced to defend blacking up when playing legendary American performer Al Jolson in autobiographical musical Jolson, bagging himself an Olivier nomination in the process.
Since then Brian has hosted several TV shows including Let Me Entertain You – hosted with Christine Bleakley – and game show Dirty Rotten Cheater, as well as performing an incredible 13 times as Buttons in Cinderella pantos.
Film fans may also be surprised to learn Brian was in the much-maligned Christian Bale movie Equilibrium in 2003.
When did Brian go on I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here?
Brian took part in the 2012 series of I’m A Celeb alongside the likes of Helen Flanagan, Linda Robson and Charlie Brooks, who won that year.
Sadly he was the first to leave the camp on Day 9, on medical grounds.
Later it was revealed that he’d stopped taking anti-depressants – the ones he’d been on for 15 years – against the orders of show bosses.
He had to be sedated for two days after his exit.
Is Brian married?
Brian has been married to wife Anne-Marie since 1996.
The celebrated their 21st anniversary on August 6 2017.
True to character, Brian proposed to her while wearing a suit of armour and after the ceremony the couple left in a Chitty Bang Bang car.
The pair have two teenage daughters.
