For his latest hard-hitting BBC series, Dark States, he revisits America once more – here’s the lowdown on the show.
When is Louis Theroux: Dark States – Heroin Town on BBC Two?
The first part of Louis Theroux: Dark States starts on BBC Two at 9.00pm, on Sunday October 8.
Dark States explores the dark underbelly of US cities, with the first show, Heroin Town, focusing on drug addiction.
There are three hour-long documentaries in total, with the subsequent shows airing over consecutive weekends.
Where does Louis visit during the series?
During the series, the acclaimed documentary maker lifts the lid on the unseen criminal and social issues blighting America.
In the first episode, Heroin Town, he visits Huntington, West Virginia, embedding himself with a community devastated by widespread opiate use.
One in ten babies in the city are born dependent on drugs, and the fatal overdose rate there is 13 times the national average.
Louis also follows the emergency services struggling against the tide of health and crime issues caused by the heroin epidemic.
For the second instalment, Trafficking Sex, Houston comes under the microscope.
America’s fourth-largest city is considered the number one hub for human trafficking, accounting for an estimated one in five of all the country’s victims.
During the episode, Louis meets women working in the illegal sex industry, and tries to understand what stops them breaking free of the murky subculture.
The final show, Murder in Milwaukee, explores gun crime and racial tensions in Wisconsin’s largest city.
Louis joins the Milwaukee Police Department, whose relationship with African American Communities faces disintegration, as they patrol the notorious District 5.
The setting for some of America’s deadliest streets, the homicide rate is the area is over 12 times the national average.
As well as following cops, Louis spends time with the communities being torn apart by gun crime, and meets a social activist and former gang leader.
Who is Louis Theroux?
Louis Theroux is a documentary maker, journalist and broadcaster who has become much-loved thanks to his diverse BBC series.
After making his name with offbeat, often excruciatingly funny shows like Weird Weekends and When Louis Met…, he has moved into more hard-hitting subject matter in recent years.
These include exploring the prisons of America, documentaries on sexual abuse, drug addiction and extreme religious groups, and the controversial 2015 film My Scientology Movie.
The 47-year-old has won two Baftas and a Royal Television Society award, and has three children with his second wife, Nancy Strang.
