WHAT can’t you miss on TV tonight? Our guide to the must-see shows…

Ambulance, 9pm, BBC One

We all know our NHS is stretched, but never has this been brought into sharper focus than with this brilliant series.

The West Midlands ambulances are once again backed up, desperate to respond to emergencies but unable to offload their patients into hospitals because of bed shortages.

Controller Louise (above) is fuming that one crew has been waiting for 50 minutes outside one hospital trying to hand over a patient.

“You try not to panic,” she says. “But you’ve got someone’s life in your hands, waiting.”

It’s the heart shown by the staff that makes this show so compelling, and it’s evident in spades when Louise and her colleagues get the worst possible news about a motorbike accident.

While doctors Nick and Ryan work tirelessly to save the biker at the scene, Louise can barely control her emotions back at base.

Russia with Simon Reeve, 9pm, BBC Two

Russia with Simon Reeve: It’s certainly interesting, but we wish they hadn’t crammed so much into an hour!

On the second leg of his mammoth tour, Simon (left) visits a Vladimir Putin-themed restaurant (where you wipe your feet on a US flag mat!), meets cult leader Vissarion (right), who claims to be the reincarnation of Christ, and drops by Tuva, a town where the majority of residents are alcoholics.

Housing enforcers: Fire Safety Special: The Grenfell Tower disaster has made many of us far more aware of fire safety – or the lack of it

The Grenfell Tower disaster has made many of us far more aware of fire safety – or the lack of it – in our homes.

In this one-off, presenter Matt Allwright investigates hazards from dangerous appliances to overcrowded properties that lack fire escapes, looks at how fires break out and, crucially, informs us how to stop them spreading.
