We give classic meals the Double Down treatment after KFC reveal new UK arrival

TO the finger-lickin’ delight of fast food fans, KFC brings the Double Down to the UK from Monday.

The breadless burger features bacon, cheese and barbecue sauce wedged between two chicken breasts and is a hit in the US.

But before it features on menus here Nick Pritchard has given some other treats the DD treatment, swapping bread for fish or meat. Each is given a rating for taste and edibility.

Fish & chips

This went much batter than I expected it to, with a fistful of chips sandwiched between two portions of haddock, all doused in salt and vinegar, of course.

The finished product certainly looked appetising and lived up to its billing.

It was easy to pick up and would be perfect for those who prefer their fish and chips on the go.

Kebab

The kebab failed to work as a sandwich

The kebab failed to work as a sandwich

I usually wake up in bed with me doner after a heavy night out – but this was slightly more civilised.

The meaty strips, chopped salad and garlic mayo looked better than I imagined but didn’t work as a sandwich. I couldn’t pick it up and put it down without reducing it to a soggy mess.

Stick to the pitta.

Pie & Mash

Nick struggled to get his mouth around the double pie and mash

A couple of pies, a dollop of mash and some gravy. It’s a Northerner’s dream – and it’s easy to see why.

Unfortunately, my eyes were bigger than my belly and I almost dislocated my jaw trying to fit it all in without it collapsing.

A great idea – but just as great a risk of injury, too.

BLT

The worst rated combo - a BLT without the bread

As you can see from the picture, this had no chance of working as a sandwich.

Using rashers of bacon as the bread, it was hard to pick up without the filling flying everywhere and ended up as a limp salad.

You’d be better tackling the whole thing with a fork – or giving one of our other concoctions a try.

Roast dinner

The roast beef double down is a great way to use leftovers

The roast beef double down is a great way to use leftovers

Sunday roasts will never be the same again. A layer of beautifully cooked roast beef, loaded up with roast potatoes, horseradish and a handful of greens, then closed with another slice of meat.

This was the best of the bunch in all areas.

You know what to do with this weekend’s leftovers. And you won’t regret it.

Nando’s

Nick's verdict: delicious and easy to hold

Nick’s verdict: delicious and easy to hold

Time to get out the double-D breasts, with Nando’s peri-peri fillets surrounding its peri-salted chips and macho peas.

Delicious and easy to hold, it worked a charm.

Keep a napkin handy, my hands were bright orange by the time I finished.

But this should be added to Nando’s menu immediately.

Burger

 A surprising disappointment - the double-down burger

A surprising disappointment – the double-down burger

I thought I was on to a winner with this one – two firm beef patties serving as the bread, with a filling of tomato, cucumber, onions and cheese.

But it was soggy, extremely greasy and lacked the soft pillowy bun to collect all the juices and hold the whole thing together.

This one can just burger off.
