WAYNE Rooney’s attempts to get his marriage back on track were dealt a blow when he had a bust-up with wife Coleen while watching cheating husband TV drama Doctor Foster.
The Premier League ace settled down to watch the show with his pregnant Wag as they tried to enjoy a quiet night just days after he admitted drink driving.
But the BBC1 show – which sees Dr Gemma Foster go to war with her cheating playboy husband Simon – sparked a huge bust-up between the couple.
A source said: “Wayne and Coleen have both been through a lot in recent weeks and the atmosphere at home has been tense.
“They were trying to have a quiet night in and were just watching Doctor Foster like millions of other couples.
“But something to do with the storyline sparked a big row between them so they ended up switching it off.
“It’s probably not the best programme for them to be watching at the moment given the circumstances of Wayne’s arrest.”
Wayne, 31, was arrested on September 1 at the wheel of Laura Simpson’s VW Beetle following a night out in Wilmslow, Cheshire.
Laura, 29, later told The Sun the pair – who met earlier that night in the cocktail bar – were on their way to her home in Irlam, Gtr Manchester, when they were pulled over by a patrol car.
The former England captain was charged with drink driving and admitted being three times over the limit before magistrates in Stockport on September 18.
He apologised for his behaviour and was handed a two-year driving ban along with 100 hours unpaid community work.
Since then Coleen, 31, has been pictured without her wedding ring, but the couple are still living together at their £4 million home in Prestbury, Cheshire.
At the time of Wayne’s arrest, Coleen was on holiday in Majorca with the couple’s three sons Kai, seven, Klay, four, and one-year-old Kit.
Doctor Foster is played by Suranne Jones, 39, while Bertie Carvel, 40, plays Simon.
Earlier this month the former Coronation Street actress said she hoped the programme might make people “think twice” about embarking on affairs.
She said: “Hopefully it will make people think twice about divorce or having an affair in the first place.
“I certainly hope it makes people think about how they conduct themselves, if they do split with somebody.
“Ultimately, I just hope viewers enjoyed the ride of watching two people who really f***ing hate each other having to breathe the same air.”
