UKRIKA Jonsson has admitted she thought she had early onset Alzheimer’s but her memory loss was actually caused by the menopause.
Speaking on today’s Lorraine, the 50-year-old opened up about the changes in her body and confessed she thought her depression had returned because of the symptoms.
Ulrika said she first experienced symptoms when she was 46 and said it left her feeling down and struggling with weight gain, her memory and anxiety.
She told Lorraine Kelly: “Depression has been a regular-ish feature of my life.
“I felt like I was going into a very dark episode and I had no warning of it beforehand, there was nothing that would have given me any signs towards it.
“And then came the most unimaginable anxiety that I’ve not known before, like proper panic.”
The Celebrity MasterChef finalist said she put on weight despite “swimming 6km a week” and eating “really healthily”.
“I just wasn’t putting these things together and then my GP said I could be perimenopausal.
“And I thought ‘No!’ because I thought this was going to be my time where I’d get my body back after having four children.
“But no, God had other plans.”
However, she said the worst part was the memory loss.
“That was really scary, being mid-sentence and forgetting the noun or the word was awful.
“I actually took my friend aside and I said to her that I was really worried that I could be getting early onset Alzheimer’s and she said ‘Oh no love, that’s just the menopause’.
“You just think it’s an ageing thing, you go off sex, you put on weight, you think I’m uglier…at least that’s how you feel.”
Speaking about her other half, Ulrika said her husband Lance Gerrard Wright is “very understanding” about what she’s going through.
“I told my kids about it too so they’d know why I was acting a bit strange,” she added.
