TOM Petty chillingly revealed just days before his death that doctors told him he hadn’t been ill for almost two decades until suffering laryngitis two months ago.
The iconic musician, who passed away aged 66 on Monday after suffering a cardiac arrest, cancelled two concerts in August due to the condition which “freaked [him] out so bad.”
Speaking in his final interview last week, he told LA Times: “I don’t think I’ve missed a show in many, many years.
“It freaked me out so bad, because it came out of nowhere. My doctor said ‘I don’t think you’ve been sick — I’m looking in my records — in over 17 years, since I’ve seen you sick with anything’.
“And I’m always like, ‘I don’t get sick.’ But, [stuff] happens.
“My doctor said, ‘Despite great evidence to the contrary, it seems you’re human.’”
The rocker was placed on life support after being found unconscious at his home in Malibu, California on Sunday night.
Tom, who released hits including I Won’t Back Down and Learning To Fly, later passed away in hospital.
Just days earlier, he had eerily spoken about the future of his band Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, insisting they could not continue if a member died.
He explained: “If one of us went down, or if one of us died — God forbid — or got sick …We’re all older now… Then we’d stop. I think that would be the end of it, if someone couldn’t do it.”
“On the back side of your sixties, most people aren’t working. This keeps us young. I think it keeps me young.”
However, he admitted touring had started to take its toll on him and he struggled to keep up like he had when he was younger.
He said: “It is grueling to do a very, very long one.
“This was quite a long one. It’s sometimes physically hard. But then the lights go down, you hear the crowd and you’re all better. You feel like, ‘OK, let’s do it.’
“But I take care of myself on the road. If you’re a singer, you’ve got to be responsible, it’s a physical thing, you have to be in shape. It’s athletic.
“The only happy thing about being off the road is I don’t have to worry about keeping myself ready to go the next day,” he added.
