ESPN.com’s Adrian Wojnarowski reports Embiid has agreed to a five-year $190 million extension with Philly — an extraordinary show of faith in the 23-year-old given he’s played just 31 regular season games since being selected at pick three in the 2014 NBA Draft.
If Embiid meets certain performance benchmarks — and stays healthy — the cap hit could impact what the 76ers are able to offer their other young stars in future years.
Joel Embiid is under contract for $200m+ in career earnings and he’s played 31 games. On the other hand, he could be one of the best ever.

Simmons will earn just under $8 million this season in the second year of his rookie contract. Philadelphia also has Markelle Fultz — who was the number one pick in this year’s draft — to accommodate in the future.
Embiid — whose salary next season will rank third behind Hassan Whiteside and Andre Drummond among all centres — hasn’t played since late January as he continues to rehab a left knee injury but has recently been cleared for five-on-five drills.

The 76ers enter today’s game in Boston with an 0-2 preseason record after dropping games to the Memphis Grizzlies (110-89) and the Celtics (110-102).
But Simmons’ play has excited 76ers — and Australian — fans, as he shows real promise at the point guard position.
The 21-year-old hasn’t shot the ball well in either game but has dished out 14 assists in 45 minutes across the two outings. Today’s game is scheduled to start at 10.30am AEDT.
