RORY McILROY has revealed he plans to turn a “great career into one of the greatest” – by quitting junk food.
The world No 6 – who has lost considerable weight since his days as an amateur – admitted he has a weakness for red wine, chocolate, burgers, chips and lager Stella Artois.
And his attempts to keep trim have been hampered by wife Erica being a brilliant baker and their obsession with the Great British Bake Off.
McIlroy tees off today in the British Masters at Close House, near Newcastle, as he looks to claim his first trophy of 2017.
He will play in next week’s Alfred Dunhill Links Championship at St Andrews.
But that will be the Northern Irishman’s final tournament of the year before he takes at least six weeks off – in which time he aims to sort out his eating habits.
McIlroy admitted: “I would be the first one to say, my diet probably hasn’t been the best over the past year and a half.
“When you travel a lot, sometimes it’s hard to get into a routine where you eat right, and you’re always eating out at restaurants and sometimes you don’t make the best choices.
“Like a dog, whatever you put in front of me, it’s going to be eaten.
“Whether I want it or not, if it’s there, I’ll have it.”
“Baking’s her [wife, Erica’s] thing. The only thing we watch in our house at the minute is The Great British Bake Off.”
And asked what his other weaknesses are, McIlroy replied: “Red wine. Dark chocolate.
“Burgers, fries, Stella – everything!”
But McIlroy thinks his upcoming break will give him time to sort himself out – and be the springboard for future success.

He added: “I’m looking forward to just getting myself right, getting myself healthy.
“I’m taking a ten-day holiday after the Dunhill. Then once I get back, I’m doing quite a bit of testing.
“It’s just basically a full health MOT type of thing – get blood done, get some food allergy testing done.
“I want to use this time to delve deeper into trying to see where I can really make ins and where I can get better and be more disciplined.
“I think once you get into a routine and just make healthy eating a habit, it’s just much easier to make good choices.
“It’s not as if I’m an old man, but you look at all of the guys that are coming up behind me.
“And I want to do everything I can to leave no stone unturned and be able to just make sure that I feel as prepared as I possibly can be going into every event.
“These next three months could give me the foundation to have the next ten years be even better than the ten years I’ve just had.
“And that turns a great career into one of the greatest careers.”
