Power forward Monfries calls time

12

After 13 years and 211 games, Monfries decided to hang up the boots, thanking the Power and Bombers for his opportunity.

“I have had a wonderful opportunity to be a part of two great football clubs,” he told the club website.

“It’s been a privilege to be associated with some fantastic people in our sport and establish lifelong relationships that I’ll value forever.

“AFL has been a huge part of my life. While my time playing at the highest level has come to an end, I’m looking forward to making a valuable contribution to the industry in some way.”

Drafted by Essendon with pick No.14 in 2004, Monfries was caught up in the club’s supplements saga before crossing to the Power in 2012.

The veteran forward missed the entire 2016 season due to the Bombers’ bans before returning to the Power this year, playing one game in Round 20, before injury struck and saw him miss Port Adelaide’s SANFL Grand Final.

Earlier, North Melbourne’s rebuild claimed two more scalps.

The Kangaroos have told Aaron Mullett and Corey Wagner they won’t be offered new contracts for 2018.

Mullett played 85 games, including 18 this season, after being recruited in the 2011 rookie draft.

Wagner was recruited with pick 43 in the 2015 national draft and played eight matches.

“Both players are young men of great quality and we’d like to thank them for their hard work and efforts during their time at Arden St,” Kangaroos football manager Cameron Joyce said.

“We wish them every success for the future.”

The moves take North Melbourne’s delistings to six, with the future of veterans Jarrad Waite and Scott Thompson to be decided this week.

On Monday, reigning premier Richmond made its first list changes of the off-season.

Three players have been delisted following the club’s drought-breaking flag, Steven Morris, Todd Elton and Taylor Hunt.

Hunt played 105 games in nine years with Geelong and the Tigers but missed out on being a part of the 2009 and 2011 flags at the Cats and this year’s premiership team at Tigerland.

Fan favourite Morris managed 87 matches since being drafted in 2011 and will continue to be a valuable member of Richmond’s VFL team in 2018.

Fellow 2011 draftee, Elton, featured in 11 games as he struggled with injury and form.
