A CENTRAL London Tube station was evacuated by armed police tonight after reports of a man acting suspiciously — and a “bang” being heard.

Dramatic footage posted online showed dozens of cops and emergency vehicles flooding the area around Old Street Station — a popular night spot packed with pub-goers and clubbers.

The station was shut and all lines going through the busy hub were suspended.

Witness George Maier said: “Just been evacuated out of Old Street station.

“Armed police came to the platform and told us all to leave immediately.

“Nothing heard beforehand from my location on southbound Northern Line platform, was simply waiting when two armed guards came in.”

He said he saw “about 15 police vans, including unmarked vans” pulling up to the scene outside.

Another witness said he heard a public announcement at the station calling for “Inspector Sands” — code for a fire alert or bomb scare.

But the Metropolitan Police quickly issued a statement saying that nothing suspicious was found.

“Police were called at approximately 21:20hrs on Saturday, 30 September to reports of a man believed to be acting suspiciously on an underground train”, a spokesman said.

“Several people subsequently reported hearing a bang. No firearm or any other object was seen.

“Officers, including firearms officers and the British Transport Police, attended the Old Street area and the station was temporarily evacuated.

“There were no reported injuries.

“At this stage nothing suspicious has been found and the incident has now been stood down.

“There have been no arrests and enquiries continue.”
