The force had been tipped off that they had been left without adult supervision and found the 12-year-old twins (a boy and a girl) looking after their younger sisters aged seven and six.

Officers discovered that Macke had left a Glock 9MM handgun on a table in her bedroom next to two ammunition magazines – one fully loaded and one partially loaded.

The children told the officers that their mother had left their home in Johnston for her trip the day before and didn’t plan to return until October 1.

Officers then called her and demanded she return home immediately – she claimed her babysitting arrangements had fallen through.

However, she did not return home for a few more days meaning she only cut her holiday short by four days.

She was arrested on Thursday morning and charged with four counts of child endangerment and one count of making a firearm available to a person under the age of 21.

Macke could face up to two years behind bars or a fine up to approximately £5,000.

Tyler Tompkins, from the Johnston police department, said: “‘I’ve never heard of anything like this before.”

He told told the KCCI news outlet: “We have situations where parents go next door or parents may go out for the night, and while that’s not advisable either depending on the age of the children, obviously leaving the country is a totally different situation.

“This, where a parent has left the country and left the kids home alone, I’ve never heard of it before.”

Photos shared on Macke’s social media accounts show her touring German landmarks with a friend and her baby.

She shared pictures of visits to the Walhalla Memorial and Regensburg Cathedral as well as a plate of bratwurst and fields of hops.

The children are now staying with other members of their family while their mother remains in jail until her next court appearance on October 9.
