THE MAYOR of Brentwood was stunned to receive a phone call from Hollywood heavyweight Tom Cruise – who hailed the Essex town as “great”.
Will Russell says the star rang to thank residents for for their patience as filming of the latest Mission Impossible instalment closed a string of major roads there this week.
He said: “I asked who he was and he told me it was Tom Cruise.
“I didn’t quite believe it at first and I became very guarded. Then I thought that I had no reason to doubt it.
“It sounded like him and he wasn’t being ridiculous.
“He wanted to thank the people of the town. He wanted to say what a lovely forest we have.
“He asked if I was the mayor and went on to say that I did know him, and he wanted to say he had a wonderful time in Brentwood and it was a great town.
“He asked about what I did as mayor, and said it was important to have such a great community and I should be proud to have the position of mayor.”
Cruise was spotted filming earlier this week jumping out of a helicopter in the town’s Thorndon Country Park.

Snooker player Steve Davis, pin-up Jodie Marsh, presenter Noel Edmonds and boxer Frank Bruno also hail from there.
It’s a far cry from the Brentwood in Los Angeles that Cruise would be more familiar with.
The wealthy suburb with a population of 235,000 has over the years been home to stars including Harrison Ford, Steve McQueen, Cindy Crawford, Gwyneth Paltrow, Marilyn Monroe and Arnold Schwarzenegger.
