Jessica Jones season 1 recap: What happened in Jessica Jones season 1? | TV & Radio | Showbiz & TV

What happened in season 1 of Jessica Jones on Netflix?

Jessica Jones on Netflix is based on the Marvel comics character of the same name.

The foul-mouthed, hard drinking reluctant superhero with superhuman strength is played by Krysten Ritter.

Season one consisted of 13 hour long episodes that centred around Jessica overcoming her past and defeating her former tormenter and abuser, Kilgrave (David Tennant) whilst trying to protect others from his evil power.

Here’s a break down of some of season one’s major plot points ahead of the season two release next week.


Hope Shlottman

The action of the series is jump started when Jessica, a private investigator, is tasked with finding a missing NYU student in episode one.

Hope Schlottman’s (Erin Moriarty) parents asked Jessica to find their daughter who has been acting differently before her disappearance.

She discovers that Hope is with Kilgrave, a man with mind control abilities who once controlled Jessica.

Still suffering from intense post-traumatic stress disorder from her ordeal, Jessica is scared to help Hope, but when she does, Kilgrave has already forced Hope to murder her own parents.

Having been left for dead in an event before the action of the season, this was Kilgrave’s way to get Jessica’s attention and let her know he was still alive.

Hope is locked up for murdering her parents and Jessica is determined to prove her innocence.

Jessica’s past and ordeal with Kilgrave

We learn in season one that Jessica’s family were killed in a car crash when she was a teenager.

After waking up from a coma, Jessica leans that he family have all died and that her treatment was paid for by a mysterious company called IGH.

The only survivor, Jessica is then brought up by the abusive mother of child star Patsy Walker, who later calls herself Trish (Rachael Taylor).

It is through defending Trish and herself from her violent mother that Jessica discovers she has superpowers.

We learn that, while using her powers to intervene in a mugging, she catches the eye of Kilgrave who uses her as his plaything/slave, constantly keeping her under his control.

This situation occurs before the events of the show, but viewers witness flashbacks where Kilgrave commands Jessica to do anything he wants under his hypnosis.

Things come to a head when Kilgrave commands Jessica to steal a hard drive from a woman called Reva Connors (Parisa Fitz-Henley).

Doing what he says, she murders the innocent woman, the shock of which snaps her out of the hypnosis and Kilgrave is seemingly killed by a bus while attempting to regain control.

The murdered woman Reva, we later learn was Luke Cage’s (Mike Colter) wife.

A fellow hero with super-strength and impenetrable skin, Luke is a widower who Jessica forms a relationship with after meeting him in his bar.

After spending the night with him, she notices a photo of Reva in his apartment.

When it eventually comes out that she was the one to kill his wife, the relationship completely collapses.

Defeating Kilgrave

In season one, Kilgrave starts to torment Jessica by using his powers to target her finds and family, including sending a soldier to attack Trish.

When an attempt to capture Kilgrave is botched, Jessica agrees to live with him in order to protect her loved ones.

She discovers that he has bought her childhood home and completely recreated it to torment her further.

He is captured again and a plan is formulated to record him using his powers on camera to use court to prove Hope’s innocence, this fails but then they manage to track down his parents who agree to testify against him.

After he forces his own mother to stab herself, he agrees to free Hope, who kills herself because she don’t want Jessica to worry about clearing her name.



Jessica then realises that she has become immune to Kilgrave’s powers, unbeknownst to him, but not before he gets control of Luke.

She and Luke fight before Jessica wins just in time to see Kilgrave murder his own father.

In a last ditch attempt to flee New York, Kilgrave captures Trish and attempts to use her as leverage for Jessica to surrender herself to him.

Believing she is under his control, Jessica secures Trish’s freedom and pretends to be hypnotised before snapping Kilgrave’s neck.

She becomes notorious for the killing which was witnessed by several people.

Jessica Jones season 2 is released on Netflix on March 8.
