Jennifer Lawrence, Zoe Saldana and Simon Pegg honour late Star Trek actor Anton Yelchin as his memorial statue is unveiled in LA
JENNIFER Lawrence, Zoe Saldana and Simon Pegg were among the stars who paid tribute to late actor Anton Yelchin at an unveiling of a statue dedicated to him yesterday.
His Star Trek co-star Zoe spoke at the emotional service which took place at the Hollywood Forever cemetery.
JJ Abrams – who directed Anton in his first two Star Trek films where he played Pavel Chekov – was also in attendance.
Anton’s bronze statue, created by sculptor Nick Marra and FX artist Greg Nicotero, was unveiled at the Life Celebration event and is now open for public viewing in the cemetery’s Garden of Legends.
Anton was killed in June 2016 at age 27 when he was pinned by his sport utility vehicle after it rolled down the driveway of his Los Angeles home.
Alongside Zoe, other speakers included the star’s parents – figure skaters Irina Korina and Viktor Yelchin.
Speaking beside several pictures of the actor showing him as a baby, a young boy, and from his film career, Zoe described the service as “bittersweet.”
According to People, she said: “It is a bittersweet moment, because we’re here for Anton, and he’s not here with us.
“But, it alleviates my heart knowing that we’ll keep him alive.
“We’re going to keep remembering him in the hopes that by practising all the things he believed in and remembering all the love that he gave us, and all the joy he gave us, we’re able to just keep him here with us.”
She added that Anton was an “exceptional friend, whether he knew you for five minutes or knew you his whole life. He was just exceptional.”
Along with Star Trek, Anton also appeared in 2011 indie flick Like Crazy with Jennifer Lawrence, starred with Christian Bale in Terminator: Salvation and voiced Clumsy in The Smurf movies.
