JAMIE Oliver has become one of the most famous chefs in the world since bursting onto the cooking scene nearly 20 years ago.
His bubbly personality and unique style in the kitchen has made him a huge hit with cooking fans. But how old is the Naked Chef and how much is he worth? Here’s the lowdown…
Who is Jamie Oliver?
Jamie Trevor Oliver was born on May 27, 1975, and is a celebrity chef and restaurateur.
His parents, Trevor and Sally ran a pub in Essex (and still do) and gave young Jamie a passion for food.
Jamie left school at 16 to go and study at Westminster Catering College and ended up working at the River Cafe in London.
He first came to public attention when he was featured in a documentary about the restaurant that was aired in 1997, and Jamie’s charisma came across on-screen – he was offered his own show and the rest is history.
The Naked Chef was a huge success and ran for three series. Jamie’s laid back approach to cooking won over the viewers and his books became best sellers.
He admits he had reservations over the name of the first show, thinking that people would assume they were tuning in to see someone cooking with no clothes on – but the producer convinced him that viewers would realise that ‘naked’ referred to his pared-down, stripped back style of cooking.
Jamie’s profile grew and he launched his own recipe magazine, cooked at 10 Downing Street and became the face of Sainsbury’s.
His innovative show Jamie’s Kitchen was launched in 2002 and followed 15 disadvantaged youngsters as Jamie attempted to train them as chefs in order to work at his new restaurant Fifteen.
The restaurant still runs as a non-profit organisation training young chefs and the Fifteen Foundation has franchises in Amsterdam, Cornwall and Melbourne.
Jamie is also known for his crusade on healthy eating.
In 2005 his show Jamie’s School Dinners garnered huge public attention and controversy as his attempts to get children fed a healthy hot meal at school within the budgetary constraints faced did not meet with all parents’ approval.
It was followed by a similar campaign, Jamie’s Ministry of Food where he tried to bring healthy eating to working class towns of England.
In 2003 Jamie was awarded an MBE for his services to the hospitality industry and he took his crusade to the US in Jamie’s Food Revolution to try to address the American’s dependence on fast food.
