Twinkies and Ding Dongs maker

Hostess Brands

has named a veteran consumer packaged-goods leader as its next president and chief executive starting next month.

The Kansas City, Mo., company said Andrew “Andy” Callahan will become CEO May 7. Executive Chairman C. Dean Metropoulos had been serving in the role on an interim basis since March 31, after

Bill Toler

retired. Mr. Toler had been tapped by the private-equity firms that bought Hostess out of liquidation to help revive the sweets maker. Hostess returned to being a publicly traded company in late 2016.

Mr. Metropoulos, founder and CEO of Metropoulos & Co., will remain as executive chairman, Hostess said Thursday.

Mr. Callahan, who was also appointed as a director on the company’s board, has more than 23 years of leadership experience at companies including

Tyson Foods

Hillshire Brands Co., Sara Lee Corp. and

Kraft Foods

Before his corporate career, Mr. Callahan spent seven years in the U.S. Navy as a flight officer.

“We believe Andy has the right combination of entrepreneurial and strategic leadership and people management skills to lead Hostess into our next phase of growth and build value for our stockholders,” Mr. Metropoulos said in prepared remarks.

Shares in Hostess, down 8% in the last year, were little changed at $14.42 in after-hours trading.
