Bananas are packed full of potassium, which regulates circulation and the amount of sodium in the body.
“Bananas are one of the richest sources of potassium in the world, with about 500mg of potassium per banana,” said nutritionist Dr Josh Axe.
“Potassium is useful in preventing high blood pressure and decreases the risks for heart disease and strokes.
“Potassium helps to lower high blood pressure because it counteracts the effect of sodium within the blood.”
You could also lower your blood pressure by eating more berries.
Berries – especially blueberries – are rich in flavonoids, a natural compound that prevents hypertension.
Omega-3 fatty acids are also an important addition to hypertension patients’ diets.
Oily fish, including salmon and mackerel, are great sources of omega-3.
The best way to lower your blood pressure is to exercise regularly, and to lose weight if you’re overweight, the NHS said.
Cutting back on the amount of salt you eat could also help to lower your risk of hypertension.
The only way of knowing if you have high blood pressure is to get it checked.
All adults over 40 years old should have their blood pressure checked at least every five years.
