If you’re planning to head away for a break, here’s what you need to know to get the best value. A report from the 10th annual Post Office City Costs Barometer in the UK has revealed the cheapest destinations in Europe. Krakow in Poland has made top of the list stealing the title from Vilnius in Lithuania. The Polish city rose four places since 2017 to claim the top spot with a weekend away costing just £164.80 (€188).

The Post Office assessed 36 cities across Europe for the survey which looked at 12 key expenditures from entry tickets to museums and galleries, a full three-course meal and two-nights accommodation in a three-star hotel; it did not include flights.

“In a clean sweep for Eastern Europe at the top of the barometer table, the Baltic capitals of Vilnius (Lithuania) and Riga (Latvia) are runners-up to Krakow, while Warsaw and Budapest are also great value,” they say.

“It’s not just in Eastern Europe that prices are low. Athens is also great value and cheapest in Western Europe – with by far the lowest meal costs of any city surveyed – while Lisbon and Lille also make the top 10.”

Amsterdam is the most expensive city to visit.

Meanwhile, the capital of Latvia, Riga has the cheapest accommodation with two nights just costing £62 (€70.83) while Athens boasts the cheapest meals for two and wine at just £37.11 (€42.40). Vilnius has the cheapest attraction costs and Amsterdam nabs the spot for the most expensive.
