Cough remedies – this 4p a mug tea could CURE your sore throat

  • Peppermint tea could help to get rid of a cough
  • The tea works as a decongestant
  • Gets rid of mucus that may aggravate the throat
  • Loosens chest congestion, and breaks up phlegm

Most coughs go away by themselves within three weeks, according to the NHS.

Getting plenty of rest and drinking lots of fluids could help to get rid of the condition.

Your cough is usually caused by a cold or flu virus, and can vary between a dry, chesty or mucus cough.

But, drinking peppermint tea everyday could relieve some of the symptoms of a cough.

Peppermint tea works as a decongestant, and helps to get rid of any mucus that may be aggravating your throat.

It loosens chest congestion, and breaks up the phlegm that may be causing your cough.

“Peppermint leaves are well known for their healing properties,” said medical website Healthline.

“You can benefit by drinking peppermint tea or by inhaling peppermint vapours from a steam bath.”

You can make a steam bath with peppermint oil.

Add three to four drops of the oil for every 150ml of hot water.

Drape a towel over your head, and take deep breaths directly above the water, Healthline said.

You could also use honey and lemon to treat your cough.

Simply add two teaspoons of honey to hot water with lemon, and drink the mixture as a tea.

Hot lemon with honey has a similar effect to cough medicines, the NHS said.

Speak to a pharmacist for advice on treating a cough.

If the cough persists for longer than three weeks, it’s best to see a GP.
