Cough: Get rid of cold or flu symptom by having a hot shower | Health | Life & Style

Coughs will usually go away by themselves within three weeks, according to the NHS.

Most coughs are caused by cold or flu viruses.

But, it could also be caused by smoking, heartburn, allergies or infections.

You could help to speed up getting rid of the cough by having a steamy shower, according to medical website WebMD.

“A hot shower can help a cough by loosening secretions in the nose,” it said.

“This steamy strategy can help ease coughs not only from colds, but also from allergies.

“Humidifiers may also help. In a dry home, nasal secretions [snot] can become dried out and uncomfortable.

“Putting moisture back in the air can help your cough. But be careful not to overdo it.”

There’s usually no need to see your GP if you have a cough.

If you develop a cough, the best thing to do is to get plenty off rest, drink plenty of fluids, and drink hot lemon with honey.

Your pharmacist could help to suggest treatments for your cough.

You should see a GP if you cough lasts more than three weeks, the NHS said.

If you have chest pain, or if you find it hard to breathe, you should also see a doctor.

Meanwhile, you could also get rid of a cough by drinking hot water with thyme leaves, it’s been revealed.
