RITA Tanner has said an emotional farewell to Coronation Street as she faces brain surgery.

In Monday night’s episodes of the ITV soap, Rita – who is played by legendary actress Barbara Knox – splashed her cash on her nearest and dearest but left her friend and lodger Gemma Winter worried when she appeared to be saying goodbye to everyone.

“Me and the street were just having a moment,” Rita said as Gemma asked her what she was doing alone.

“It will still be here when you get back,” Gemma pointed out.

“Look, I know you’re going to say that I’m a nosy cow and everything but are you sure you’re alright?” asked Gemma.

“You still harping on about a few bottles of bubbly?” said Rita back.

“A few bottles? You were chucking cash around like there was no tomorrow,” pointed out a concerned Gemma ahead of Rita’s brain operation on Wednesday.

“You think I lost my marbles? Well I knew exactly what I was doing,” Rita said.

“It’s coming to something when you can’t spoiler my nearest and dearest every blue moon.”

Sending Gemma on her way, Rita stood alone on the cobbles where she had spent her life and began crying.

“I spent the best years of my life here, you and me we’ve gone through a lot, I’ll say we have. And do you know? I wouldn’t have had it any other way.”

Then as she walked down the famous cobbles sobbing, the classic song played her out as she was alone on the street.
