CORONATION Street bosses are to kill off one of their biggest characters, Gary Windass.
In yet-to-be aired scenes Gary, who’s played by Mikey North, 30, will die in an explosion while working in the Ukraine – prompting heartache on the cobbles.
A TV source said: “Gary’s family are devastated after they’re told of his tragic death.
“Gary’s mum Anna is told that he was killed driving a diplomat whose car was ambushed, blown up and there are ‘no survivors.’
“Sarah is inconsolable when she’s told of his passing and everyone is desperate for more information from the foreign office to find out exactly what’s happened.
“The storyline reaches a climatic point towards the end of this year – with Sarah once again left heartbroken.”
Meanwhile, the news will also come as a shock to Pat Phelan’s daughter Nicola Rubenstein, who’s currently pregnant with Gary’s baby.
Nicola and Gary recently slept together after a few drinks and both are keen to consign their liaison to the past – but when Nicola makes her discovery, that looks set to be pretty difficult.
Actor Mickey has been with the long-running soap for nine years after joining as Gary in 2008.
The Corrie star became a dad to son Archie in November 2016 with his wife Rachel.
He revealed the terrifying details of Rachel’s labour which resulted in a near-blood transfusion after an episiotomy went wrong.
He said: “She was throwing up with the pain. I had tears in my eyes just watching.”
