SOMETIMES the strangest of situations can bring about the most lovely of things – and on I’m a Celebrity it usually means close friendships formed in the face of camp life hardship.
Here are just some of the unlikely bonds that have formed over the years as stars roughed it out in the ITV campsite…
Carol Vorderman and Joel Dommett
Countdown queen Carol and comedian Joel proved themselves to be a surprise match made in heaven when they appeared together on the show in 2016.
After bonding over Joel’s surprising love of calculus (that included a Pi tattoo on his arm), the pair found themselves flirting buddies and a crack team when it came to challenges.
Joel later admitted he had a crush on the Carol despite their 25 year age gap, and while their romance never came to be their friendship remained.
Tinchy Stryder and Michael Buerk
Rapper Tinchy Stryder found himself a firm confidante and pal in posh newscaster Michael Buerk while in the 2014 camp.
During their time in the jungle together, Michael was taught how to rap by the musician, while Tinchy found someone to share his camp grievances.
After becoming the third person to be eliminated from the show, Michael praised the young star and said: “We come from different worlds. But he’s great, a really nice, interesting guy.
“He’s one of those people that once you get to know them the more you get to know. “
Joe Swash and George Takei
East end boy Joe Swash admitted himself that he didn’t think he’d get too close to anyone in the jungle – and then he met George Takei.
The pair formed an alliance that couldn’t be broken when they were on the show together, and their bromance bloomed into addictive TV.
Speaking about Joe, George said: “Coming here, immediately Joe stood out. He’s so endearing and he’s so alive. He so completely animated all the time. I love Joe.”
“That’s a great thing I wanna take from the jungle, a friend like George,” gushed Joe. “Somelike like George and someone like me getting on. I think the world of the man, I really do.”
When Joe was crowned the winner, he celebrated the only way he knew how – and planted a smacker on the lips of the Star Trek icon the second he came over the bridge.
Edwina Currie and Jake Quickenden
Former X Factor star Edwina found himself an unlikely admirer in Conservative party member Edwina when they both were on the show together in 2014 – and they felt the same.
When quizzed about her time on the show, Edwina told Ant and Dec that “her Jakey” was the one that should take home the crown.
She gushed: “He’s been the one for me right from the start. He’s a gent, he’s a star, a great star in the making and he doesn’t even know it.”
Jake also said that he thought he “fell a little bit in love” with her with they were on the show.
Peter Andre and Katie Price
Peter and Katie started a showmance to end all showmances as they met and fell in love on the 2004 series of the ever-popular show.
Viewers became hooked as the pair began to flirt on screen, watching a real love bloom between the pair as the cameras kept a close eye on everything that unfolded.
Now, as we all know well enough by now, the pair’s flirtation ended up seeing the pair getting married and having two children, Junior and Princess together.
However, they split in 2009, and both pairs have gone on to marry and have children with new partners.
Mark Wright and Dougie Poynter
Tattooed McFly bassist Dougie Poynter and Towie star Mark Wright didn’t appear to be two people that would get on – but they struck a friendship within hours.
Bonding over quiet heart-to-hearts, playful banter and gruesome bushtucker trials, the pair became attached at the hip.
Their tight bond took them all the way through to the final and together they became the top two camp mates, with Ant and Dec calling them the “true romance of the series”.
When Dougie won, Mark graciously praised the new King of the Jungle and reduced his mate to tears as he said: “There couldn’t be a better winner. He’s the nicest kindest person in the whole entire world.”
